Not so convenient

This is my second zip rental where I’ve had to call and get another vehicle due to it being filthy and the car not working. The customer service has been nice about resolving issues.

Do not use if you have a chase capital one or chime card they dont expect it anymore which is dumb

App shows no cars and won’t log in

No cars appear anywhere in all of London and I can’t even see the blue area for flex cars. Phoned support and they told me they’re all just too far. I try again in another area and same thing no cars at all no blue area, I phoned again and was told to reinstall the app. Done that and now I can’t even log in on the app, my password is correct I’ve just reset it and it works on web but not in app. The app was tricky to use before but now it’s literally impossible , it just doesn’t work at all. Fix please or lose customers

SCAM

I tried to book to go in a road trip with my brothers and Zipcar kept declining my card when I have DOUBLE the amount on file to spend for this trip, once I reset the app and open it back up this account. Zipcar closed my account and permanently wouldn’t let me rent with due to a problem on THEIR end.

Rented a car for daily errands

The vehicles was smelly and AC had a smell that I couldn’t even turn on because it smelled awful so I had to run around with the windows down the whole time

Unable to get code to sign in the app

The app doesn’t send me the code to my telephone number to sign in. I booked and was unable to get access to the car because the app doesn’t allow me to get in. I called and was told to text a number and type START—I tried 10 times to no avail! I also find that the application is not “older” generation friendly! This application is for a younger generation and it’s sad that older people are not valued or taken into consideration when developing an application.

Hey guys! Just wanted to give a little review. Zipcar is deff quite cool, the only issues that I have are the fact they will say the cars are $90 but will really charge you over that price bcus you have to add protection plans. So expect to pay ABOUT 150- 190 a Day. Mine was always 198 a day. Ridiculous tbh especially as a rides hare driver because that’s practically a day of work unless you’re like me and try to get anywhere form $300-$320 a day but if not you’re wasting your time.

Terrible Subscription

Twice I have used this app to reserve a nearby car that was available only to show up to the car and discover that Zipcar switched my location pick up without notifying me. I rarely leave reviews, but this has twice now made me late for important appointments. Terrible customer service.

App won’t find cars

Ever since the recent update, the app won’t find any cars, no matter where I try to search. It gives me an error message saying that “there are no cars in this area” and to “update my location.”!But it also shows me search results for an area hundreds of miles away from where I am. And whenever I try to find an area on the map manually and search there, it gives me the same error message. I’ve used Zipcar for years and I’ve never had this issue before

The car was beyond dirty. It was revolting!

DO NOT USE (4/24/2025)

If you’re in the Philadelphia area avoid this company like the plague. I thought this was going to be a great way to run the errands that I needed but after arriving to my vehicle there was no key and no way to use it. I was then moved to another vehicle that had no gas card and almost no gas in it, it was filthy and clearly hadn’t been cleaned, and the best they offered me was to tell me to pay for the gas myself. No offer of comping my reservation after the two vehicles that did not hold up to their companies standards and my only option was to either pay for gas myself on top of what I was already spending just to rent the vehicle or get a refund. Do not use their company, this is the worse experience I’ve ever had.

Beware they take a non-refundable £15 fee.

They took 15 pounds from me to review the license papers, and after many days, they refused without giving a reason. I asked for the 15 pounds refund , and they refused, although there are many companies that provide the same service without the 15 pounds fee. Note that most of the cars they have are vans.

Not worth it

Way too expensive, don’t do it all yall plz find another way this isn’t a joke.

Privacy setting broken

In privacy setting dialog, the toggle button does not work so you cannot choose to protect your privacy (not selling your data). Horrible!

Pricing Out Users

Live in Chicago, only need a car a fee times a month for site visits. Two main issues: 1) Cars disappearing from neighborhoods is a common occurrence; the available car down the block may disappear and never return. 2) Costs are going up (A LOT) - a Toyota Corolla used to be $11/hr, but now it's $14/hr. I've had Zipcar since august, a substantial increase for less than a year. A car payment is cheaper than Zipcar these days, will be canceling my subscription in May. An honest review!

Would not recommend

Policies and fees are outrageous and customer service gives no leeway. Will be cancelling my membership and no longer using.

Unreliable service

It’s pretty disappointing to find out for the 4th time in a month that the car you booked was not at the expected location. So often I’ve to waste my time speaking with customer support who do assure me that this thing will be escalated and obviously there’s no change. Although I do give props to the support team who have to clean up the messes of the Zipcar management. Support staff is doing their job but the management not so much. Be better!

This car smelled like smoke. This car was dirty. This car had no gas card. This car I had to pay for my own gas. This car was a massive. I cleaned it up and left it all in the front.

Affordability

Never actually tells you when you are billed extra, i was billed $50 for 10 minutes extra so be very punctual if you're using this app. i also have multiple, identical fees on my card for one singular trip. so i payed twice for one ride. it's really not the greatest deal and getting a car is cheaper in the long run.

If you love the smell of cigarettes, mystery stains on the seats and an general feeling of sketchiness. Try Zipcar.

Buggy setup and unreasonable application fee

The process of signing up should be easier and less buggy. Implement Apple Pay and integrate Onfindo well. Application fees should be waived.

Perfect in cities

Living downtown in a city, zip car is a life saver when we need to pick up furniture or any other big items. Very convenient, nice support and cars are for the most part in great shape

Unreliable

I had a reservation that I booked 2 days in advance get cancelled an hour before the trip began. They were unable to find any replacements and I had to cancel my trip because of it. While customer service was kind, that still does not excuse the unreliability behind their service.

I rented a car last week and went to park in the public parking spot in my neighborhood, only to find it was blocked by another Zipcar and I had nowhere to park. I spent over an hour driving around looking for parking spots (on the phone with Zipcar support the whole time) where they recommended I park in a lot 1-4 miles away and 'walk home' despite renting the car amidst a busy day and nursing an injury. They promised repeatedly they were filing this incident on my account and I would not be charged if the car was towed or received parking tickets, only to be charged $100+ to both extend the car (which the employee lied and said was free since I spent the hour looking for parking and at a huge inconvenience to em) as well as for the parking ticket. I'm grateful I knew better than to leave it parked in a tow away zone because these scammers would've charged me $1k+ for that issue. After 5 calls, 3 emails they are now saying they don't have any record of the issue on my file (despite multiple employees seeing it before) and demanding I share evidence (which I don't have because it's a phone call). I just cancelled my membership and reported the fraud to my bank and the better business bureau. Do not use this company - they will charge you exorbitantly for things ttheir employees tell you to do, while refusing to provide any credit for the inconvenience and time lost (both trying to park and 5x calls later).

If you have a paper license while you wait for your permanent, they will deny you and charge you $25

Will never ever use this app again. Was excited because there are zip cars close by and seemed like the best deal. Now I just feel used and dumb. Go with Turo or literally anyone else!

Taking pictures before the trip wasted my time. Why didn’t Zip update us that this was now mandatory. Furthermore, the zip app camera doesn’t have flash. The interior photos are black. My car was dirty. I did take pics on my phone if you want them. After all that, the car would not start. I had to call customer support. I was late for my day. Considering changing car apps

My first and only Zipcar experience ended in my car not being able to start. The customer service rep was so rude and condescending especially when I asked for some sort of reimbursement for the time wasted and the stress it caused. Will not be using this again

Ridiculous Application process

This service seemed great and convenient. Sadly I was never able to use it. I applied under the rouse that the application would be as easy as 1,2,3. Take pictures of my drivers license and pay with a credit card and it would be approved in no time. I didn’t hear back for over a week. After escalating I was required to provide images of a passport, a utility bill proving my billing address, and I had to take a selfie holding my valid drivers license and “piece of paper with 'Zipcar' and today's date on it.” I’m not sure what the ransom type selfie would prove, but it does prove that Zipcar applications are not as easy as 1,2,3.

Dead battery 15min in

Picked up a Zipcar this AM from a location on the same street as my home. Got it home, loaded it with things I needed for errands that I would need to run before an important time-sensitive appointment. Got back into the Zipcar and it wouldn’t start. The battery was completely dead. No way to get me another car near my home. Day ruined.

What’s the point of booking the car, taking my money, and the car not being there where it’s supposed to be?? Received assistance on getting another car but it delayed my trip. Also, the card that is used to fill up the gas before you return it doesn’t even work! Cool concept but clearly something’s not working.

I’m here with a car that I can’t get into the app is buffering on lock mode without actually locking the car. I had to call for cs to lock it in 32 degrees Fahrenheit weather with a wind chill. I have my son’s and my wife and they are freezing. The car is filthy inside and out. But I was in a crunch for time and couldn’t get another car. Now asking for manager they put on an endless hold and where still out here freezing. They just hung up on me.

Zipcar would go down as the worst company I've ever encountered with! They charged me $400 late return fee for not being able to return the car due to an urgent matter. They suspended my account as well. Do not use this scam service ever!

Terrible Experience

My experience was horrible… And I’m actually very surprised! I made my reservation in advance, and when I got to the location where the car was suppose to be, it was not there. Apparently the person who had it before me didn’t bring it being back. Long story short, I ended up getting a car and, at this point it was 2 1/2 hours later from my initial reservation time. The car I did finally get was absolutely filthy!! The seats were stained and dirty and it smelled horrible! Apparently Zipcar does not clean their cars in between rides… After many calls to customer service, I was advised that I would be refunded for the car because of the condition it was in. Their representative sent me an email advising I’d be refunded and the it was processed… I’ve got nothing. My case appears close and all I’ve gotten was about $20 between a credit and a refund sent to my bank card. This was a totally upsetting experience and I just want to be refunded and done with this.

WARNING: Most of their vehicles have expired registration.

Make sure to check the glove box with registration papers. More likely than not you will have papers that are out of date. It is illegal to drive a car in US without proper registration.

do not use zip car

if you're thinking about using zip car you should definitely reconsider you would save money by using Uber or Lyft and it would be much more convenient. Zipcar charged me $240 for what should've been a $28 trip and even if they had charged me the accurate amount it is such a stressful headache to try and find the car and return it in the allotted amount of time because you can only rent it for blocks of time starting and ending on the hour and it can take an hour just to find and start the car and then they charge you whatever they want and it has no relevance to what actually happened. I contacted Zipcar about this ridiculous charge and they say they will get back to me within 24 hours but as it stands they've taken $240 out of my bank account when I returned the car ahead of time and had it for less than two hours.

LOTS OF HIDDEN FEES

Really creative service. Love the concept, somewhat easy to use, and somewhat affordable… until you finish your ride and suddenly there are 4 rows of extra charges. Would have enjoyed the service more if they were more transparent about their pricing. I paid $20/hr for a car that was supposed to be $13/hr??? Then I had to call the help line because the car wouldn’t start, wasting the first 15min of my travel. Then I tried to extend the trip only for the app to stop working and the phone lines to go silent. I arrived 10min late and was charged $50. Upon reviewing the receipt, there were an additional $8 in random fees. A ride that was supposed to be $31 ended up being $98

Late fee, I didn’t even move the car

I rented the car for 6 hours one day, I forgot my scooter inside. Contacted Zipcar they kept telling me to meet the next person but kept giving me wrong times to show up and everytime I showed up the car wasn’t there, when I was finally able to book a car for a time and get my scooter back( keep in mind all I did was unlock the car grab my scooter then lock the car and end trip) I was charged a $65.13 late fee for that day, I contacted them to get my money back since I clearly didn’t drop it off late. They told me “since it’s your first time dropping it off late we’ll refund you “. I didn’t care they said that at least I got my money back right ? Wrong I was only refunded $53.62 .

Horrible Experience

Been a subscriber with Zipcar for over a year. Never had one good experience: - dirty cars - cars parking lots have no Internet coverage (good luck connect to the app to end or start a trip) - continuous technical issues with the app; when using the same account on different phones - bad customer service (most of the time)
